1.3 billion people in our world have no access to electricity

2.7 billion people are without clean cooking facilities

Without access to reliable modern energy sources, people are denied the opportunity to make a living, get an education, access critical health services, cook food safely or even keep warm whilst they sleep.
"We are on the brink of an exciting, sustainable future: clean energy for all. But we need to get our priorities right; people everywhere should be able to enjoy the health, educational and social benefits that modern energy sources offer."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

The battle to end poverty is being fought on many fronts, but a focus on energy access - a vital enabling element - has to date been lacking.

Energy Aid has been created to address the biggest challenges to achieving change:

Raising awareness
Sharing information
Cross-sector collaboration
Leveraging private sector resources
Creating new energy markets
"Energy powers human progress, from job generation and economic competitiveness, from strengthening security to empowering women. This is a matter of equity, first and foremost, but it is also an issue of urgent practical importance."

Kandeh Yumkella, Director General, UNIDO

Energy Aid works collaboratively with partners across the private, public, and NGO sectors.

IBM and Practical Action helped create Energy Aid; many other organisational partnerships are developing rapidly around the world. Energy Aid is a supporter of the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
"I believe there is a unique opportunity here for business to lead a global revolution in energy access, to help create an initiative which can help lift billions of people out of poverty, creating a fairer and more prosperous world..."

Simon Trace, CEO Practical Action and Energy Aid Trustee

Energy Aid launches on 1st December 2011, and will be at the launch of the UN Year at The World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi 16-19 January 2012.
